Edinburgh Auditions to Find ‘Voice in a Million’
Talented youngsters from across Edinburgh are being invited to showcase their singing talents this Friday (23rd March) to earn a place performing at Edinburgh Playhouse in May at Scotland’s first ever ‘Voice in a Million’ concert.
Featuring hundreds of performers aged between 7 and 19, with many chosen through a local auditioning process, the Edinburgh concert is the latest in a UK-wide series of high profile events staged to raise awareness of fostering and adoption issues.
With more than 230 performers from local schools and choirs already selected to join the concerts’ sensational backing choir, this weeks’ auditions are now searching for extra talented youngsters to perform individual or group solo slots within the show.
Voice in a Million founder Jo Garofalo, said: “I’m sure a country with such a rich musical heritage as Scotland must be brimming with so many talented young people who could really shine on stage and get so much out of being part of our choirs.
“We offer children of all abilities the chance to come together, enjoy being part of a magical experience and ultimately feel the thrill of performing in front of thousands of people at our concerts.
“The key thing about Voice in a Million, compared to TV talent shows, is that we don’t set out to judge young people who apply. We provide a friendly environment and don’t believe in critiquing our performers, instead we seek to get as many people involved as possible at whatever level.”
“At the same time through our performances and the stories we tell in our shows we really want to highlight the whole issue of fostering and adoption in the UK, and encourage our audiences to do all they can to help some of the most vulnerable children in society.”
With celebrity supporters such as Elton John and Piers Morgan, Voice in a Million was set up by founder Jo Garofalo in 2009, after she became inspired to raise awareness of adoption and child care issues following her own experiences in trying to start an adopted family.
Since its creation with just 32 performers, the project has grown quickly and now boasts more than 22,000 registered performers, while concerts are being staged at major arenas such as the O2 Arena in London and LG Arena in Birmingham, as well as smaller venues in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Croydon.
Plans are already afoot to expand the project internationally across the Atlantic in coming years, meaning talented Scottish young people who take part in the Edinburgh show may get a chance to perform stateside in the future.
